Part 7: Approaching Our Fears

Lesson Goals and Instructions

You (the clinician) will tell your student(s) that this section is titled “Approaching Our Fears” and this is when we incorporate everything we have learned thus far and put it into action! In this section we start planning how we are going to show stuttering who is boss by making goals and creating small steps to take action. It is imperative that you emphasize to your student(s) that in this section: flexibility and grace are key. Planning and setting goals is extremely important however, when the real moment comes, the student must understand nerves can and do get the best of us. Approaching the fear of stuttering takes TIME, so much so that it will most likely be a lifelong approach rather than a section to complete and move on. As the student approaches his/her fears, this will most likely result in a variety of thoughts and feelings to discuss each week in therapy such as “how I thought it would go” vs “what actually happened”. Remember that this is a journey and we are winning as long as we are trying. After watching each video complete the worksheets. This can be done multiple times with multiple goals. Once your student achieves one goal, the same process can be applied to the next.

Rationale

    • Major goal: striving for bravery OVER striving for fluency
    • Not allowing stuttering to dictate your decisions
    • Giving control back to student
    • Building resilience
    • Good for goal setting
    • Student builds confidence and is proud of their accomplishments
